BOOTLEG or counterfeit, whichever angle you view this argument, in my eyes both of the above scream ‘cheap, fake, knock-off’. What I’m saying is, they’re not real. Bootleg culture has been present for years.
It stems from an evermore expensive industry, littered with even more exclusive collaborations and releases, week-in, week-out. Consumers can’t keep up, it’s a relentless rally, wave-after-wave-after wave. It’s the consumers that opt for cheaper alternatives — a naturally maternal instinct of scrimping and saving for the 12 months prior to a holiday, that, on a wider scale is the situation. NOW, I slide the focus towards a pairing of key years in Asics history – 2007 and 2015.
2007 welcomed back the GEL-Lyte III. A collection of bright, zero-boundary collaborations in partnership with both well-renowned and fresh-faced designers. Patta and Alife both hit the target with their shots, with these iterations being amongst the most sought after within ASICS circles. However, it also marked the year that Ronnie Fieg took his first step towards the limelight, forming a duet with New York, Soho, based store, the late David Z. NIKE have played their ace of 2018 and it’s only April. Who would have thought this colour-clad orgy of corduroy would create such a stir; not just within the UK but globally. Customers were camping outside shops in the pouring rain for a pair of shoes… ‘just a pair of shoes’.

GEL, often outshined by Nike’s trademark visible Air or Adidas’ Boost technology — but should ASICS be given more credit?
In 2016, we celebrated the 30th anniversary of ASICS’ notorious sole unit. Paired with cut ‘n’ sew tiger stripes, reflective cat’s eyes in many cases, and heel model embellishment – it’s needless to say that this is a landmark series for runners as a whole.
